The Meeting was first staged in 1711 at the request of Queen Anne and due to its popularity was increased to a four day meeting by 1768. That popularity was further cemented with the advent of the Gold Cup in 1807 with the five day meeting as we now know it coming to fruition to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee in 2005.
Following the Re-development of Ascot in 2006 there are now over 250 private Hospitality Boxes and during the week no expense is spared as Dinners tuck into Crab, Lobster, Beef Sirloin or Smoked Salmon. Pimms, fine wines and Champagne are consumed at large along with the great British tradition of Tea with Cucumber Sandwiches and Scones laced with jam and Cream.
However, not all racegoers choose to relax in such grand style with Picnics and small parties staged on the lawns and particularly around the Car Parks which form an integral part of the social gathering and not just a place to park your vehicle. Some will arrive by Helicopter and some will arrive by Limousine but all come for the fashion and the sport.
In recent years Television coverage has become an integral part of the marketing of this event with the BBC airing its programmes every day from the paddock side. The media coverage of the designer dresses and outfits on show has encouraged The Face of Ascot competition and The Royal Ascot Fashion Show awards.
